Coach Like all players go through, I went into a...
I don’t really know anything about your level of play or just how bad those tournaments went for you so it is hard to say. However, I can’t imagine, if you had good results before July, that your chances to play D1 golf are gone. July entering grade 12 is prime time to make yourself known and impress the coaches. However, as time passes and the emotion wears off, coaches will look...

Would you consider a transfer student for a...
I have had a couple players transfer in and a couple transfer out. It isn’t something you can look for or predict and rarely do I pursue someone who is transferring. However, i feel like transfering is becoming far more prevalent these days. I would do some research, try to really understand the reason for leaving the other school, and then consider them as a recruit if I felt good about...

When you're scouting on the range, what are you...
I actually wonder that all the time. I see many of my peers watching on the range and I really don’t know what they are watching. I don’t recruit much on the range. Sometimes I will swing by just to get a feel for the quality of the ball flight and contact, but most of the time I’m just trying to learn something about the guy by how he practices or just make sure he knows...

If i send you a video of my son golf swing and you...
I can’t speak for other coaches on this one, but I really don’t get much out of watching video. I don’t bring in any player unless I’ve seen them play a decent amount of live competitive golf on the course. We keep a small roster and for me to be sure about bringing a certain player in I like to really develop a lot of comfort with their total golf game. Occasionally I...

Coach since d3 does not have a nli.. Can a player...
Sorry, but I don’t really understand the question so I can’t give a complete answer. I would say this….just communicate with the coach. I believe it is always good to keep a commitment. However, if you have some sort of understanding with the coach and they understand your desires and goals you might be able to find a perfect scenario that allows you to make a commitment, but...

I am going to be a High School senior. I have...
I think it will be very tough to get a chance at this point at a D1 or D2 program. Perhaps you could start at a junior college, continue to improve, and put yourself in a position to have more options in a couple years. I think you need to be a Scratch to get serious looks from D1 or D2 programs. Ask me anything

Do you need to have a professionally made tape to...
Any tape is fine. Just make sure you have “front” and “down the line” angles. Also, it is good to have a couple of different clubs. For me, I’d be just as interested in a recruit talking on a video and telling me about himself as I would in their swing. Something to consider. Ask me anything

At the start of the year I played very badly and I...
I’m not sure what to tell you on this one. I’d have to believe that the coach’s situation changed. Maybe he has now placed others ahead of you. If you literally can’t get in touch with him you may want to move on. If he is still responsive at all I would just ask him where you stand. Ask him if he has any interest in recruiting you. Early in the process coaches rarely...

Question: What Do We Look For?
when you watch a player play a tournament, what do you look for in their game? This is a question I ask myself all the time and try to refine my answer continually. It tends to change as I learn more about what makes great players. Some players can look really good to the eye in recruiting, but have some flaw that limits their potential. Most of what we need to know about a person and player and...

Nice Comment....Thanks!
Hey Coach, I just wanted to say that this tumble is so helpful and I am so glad that I have found it. I was wondering if you consider recruiting newbies to the sport who started competitively golfing in their teenage years? Thanks! Thanks for the nice comments. I’m glad to help a little. I would recruit anyone regardless of how new they are to golf. However, it is rare that new golfers would...

Question: Didn't Get This One....
Hi Coach, I had a question about signing a letter of intent….LEts say that a player has a college that he really wants to play golf at but does not get recruited by them…but he wants to play golf in college so thus signs a letter of intent with a col I didn’t get the end of this question. Formspring (the software I use for these questions) only allows questions of a certain...

Question: When To Start Contacting Coach
I’m a high school golfer looking to start contacting coaches and I was wondering what point in high school is the right time to send emails to coaches? It is never too early to start contacting coaches. Make sure to make your communication sincere and personal. Also, send follow up emails.

Question: High SAT and Low Grades
I have very high sats and acts (<99th percentile) but my grades are low due to the difficulty of school and other issues in my life. how would a coach view that Most schools admit based on a matrix using both numbers (GPA and test scores). So you can make up for a low SAT with high grades and vice versa. I don’t know your specifics as far as grades go, but I think you would still have...
