So can a recruit be offered 45% golf and 55%...
Yes, but I don’t think it happens often. I think more often a recruit may get a smaller chunk of academic scholarship than they get for athletics. Occasionally someone with very high academic marks goes to a school with weak academics and they can get a lot of academic scholarship. That same person may get no academic scholarship at a stronger academic university. Ask me anything

What national ranking do college coaches follow...
Tough to tell. I like JGS because of the excellent detail I can get for each event and for the many smaller events listed. I don’t look at the rankings much, but just the results of the events. Ask me anything

How do coaches view recruiting services that...
I don’t use them much and I only like to deal with the kid I’m recruiting and their parents. Some may be really helpful for certain recruits. Others may help in areas that I may know less about (Latin America, Europe). However, I want to deal directly with the student and wouldn’t bring someone in that I haven’t seen play myself. Very rarely have I recruited someone...

So with that said a D1 coach like yourself when...
I’ve found JGS to be very good because all I really care about is results. How each ranking chooses to process results into rankings is a mystery and something I don’t find too credible. However, I love to be able to see all the events that someone plays in. I look at how they play in relation to everyone else. I like to see how they play locally, regionally, and nationally. So...

Yes, this is possible, but completely depends on the specific school. You will need to address this with each coach individually. It will be different everywhere, but the answer is certainly “yes.” Ask me anything

I know some players get more scholarship dollars...
There really isn’t a “norm.” Every program is different. One person could be able to get a “full scholarship” to one school and not even be offered a “walk-on” (no scholarship) spot to others. It really is a situation of supply and demand. This is why open communication with coaches is so important. Ask me anything

Average Scholarship % = Total Scholarship Amount / Number of players on the team. Cost to Go To College = Total Cost of Specific School - Total Scholarship Amount Ask me anything

So if a schools tution is $50,000 per year, what...
Technically, with 4.5 scholarships per Men’s Program you can just divide the number of players on the team into the 4.5 and get the average. We have 10 on our team so the “average” scholarship would be 45% of the total cost (tuition, books, room and board). In my dozen years of coaching I’ve seen the “mean” scholarship go slightly down as there has been a...

As a D1 coach what's your time frame for your...
I don’t have a set time frame. It depends on each person and their situation and we make our offers when it is the right time—whenever that may me. I’m not sure I can comment on where we are with our recruits in this class per NCAA Rules so I’ll hold off on specifics with this question. Each program would have different answers on this each year. Generally speaking, it...

Do most coaches mix golf scholarships with...
Many coaches do this. However, remember that for DI Men’s Golf each team has 4.5 scholarships for GOLF. In Women’s Golf there is 6.0. So if they give “academic” scholarships they aren’t part of that 4.5 or 6.0. The coach does not have control over the awarding of academic scholarships. The availability of academic scholarships varies dramatically throughout the...

Yes. I think a coach is interested in more than just your scores. Feel free to update him/her on what you are up to: how school is going, what you are doing with your free time, what you are working on in your game, and what things you are passionate about. Think of your recruit/coach relationship as building a relationship. If they seem interested in you do everything you can to get to know...

Would you recommend getting lessons at the course...
I think a nice variety of events is fine. Some big events are important because you can be compared against the best players from many places. Small events can be great for developing confidence and learning how to win. I really don’t think that getting lessons at the course of a college team would do that much. If you live close enough to do that the coach would know about you if you are...

From a college golfer: any advice on how to finish...
So much focus is placed on time management these days, but the real challenge is energy management. Learning to manage and control your energy levels is crucial to perform consistently. Nobody can concentrate and give full energy to something all day or all round. If you don’t know how to save or create energy you won’t have anything left in the tank late in a round. So find ways to...

There would certainly be less opportunities available because most coaches will have completed most of their recruiting at that point. However, sometimes some scholarship frees up for various reasons or sometimes coaches may not have used all their scholarship. Lots of us will continue to keep an eye out for unique situations that come along that might make our teams better. Coaches seem to find a...

It seems as if more schools are recruiting...
I just responded to a question basically discussing the opposite of this—coaches recruiting more out-of-state and internationally. The two questions just show how different things can be depending on where you are looking. If you are seeing that coaches are recruiting more in-state I think the economy would be the main reason. All public schools have significantly higher tuition for...

I don’t know your skill level so I couldn’t say for sure. However, I think if you are consistently finishing high in significant amateur events you would have a chance. Without successful tournament play I don’t think college golf programs would be interested in bringing you on to the team. Ask me anything

Coach, is there any extra benefit for schools to...
Generally, there isn’t necessarily any extra benefit for recruiting out of your state or recruiting internationally. The two main benefits as I see them would be, 1) access to more talent or different/better players and 2) greater exposure for your university and greater diversity within your program. The main reason coaches recruit out of their state or out of the country is to be...

12 Year-Old Recruit?
I got a letter from a 12-year old recruit today.  You gotta love that college golf helps a sixth-grader already think about preparing for college.  There are certainly much worse things he could be doing with his time than writing me.

What is it like when you and another coach who is...
Funny question there. Sometimes when I’ve had this we just don’t talk about it. Other times we talk a lot about it and hope that if one of us doesn’t get him that the other one does. I don’t, and I think many other coaches don’t use negative recruiting. I encourage everyone to do a lot of homework and to contact the people that really know and all that, but I...
