At any given time, how many recruits are you...
This changes all the time. I prefer to keep my numbers down and really focus on those I do correspond with. Some coaches are able to maintain frequent contact with a lot more. Feel free to ask that of each coach you talk to. Ask me anything

Probably too high to be recruiting at the top-ranked golf programs. However, there are always opportunites in other places. Ask me anything

Do you look at height as potential?
No I don’t. I don’t see any correlation with height and golf performance. Ask me anything

The Senior Year of School......Some Advice
I committed to my college in the summer before my senior year.  These days, recruits are committing even earlier.  That last year of high school was tough because my mind was already in college but my body was still in high school.  It feels like a really long year filled with so much anticipation. Many recruits have met most of their academic requirements such that they can take a very easy...

What's your take on "golf academies" like IJGA,...
I don’t really know enough about them to make a fair comment. I think each coach would have a different opinion. I haven’t recruited from academies much. Nor have I ever been to one to observe what they do. I have a couple players that had good experiences there. My own kids will go to their local high school. Ask me anything

That’s a great point. I agree with you, but we feel the same undue pressure that there won’t be any top players left if we wait. I wish it weren’t this way. Ask me anything

If I am knowingly being illegally recruited by a...
This one is tough because it is completely different for me than it is for you. For me, I would love to see this reported and have the coach punished by the NCAA for knowingly breaking the rules. However, you don’t have much to gain from turning a coach in. There are certainly coaches who don’t respect the rules as much as they should. Some recruits don’t have any problem...

Hey Coach if you get a friend request for a coach...
It means at least they are interested in knowing you more. It doesn’t guarantee strong interest, but I would think a coach wouldn’t “friend” a recruit unless they at least had some interest. Ask me anything

Is it ok to ask a Coach if they do further...
Absolutely! I think every coach will say “yes” to the question of if they do further teaching and training of their players. This question often comes up in recruiting. I believe it is hatched by golf instructors, parents, or players that have a certain idea of what it is to “teach” golf. That idea often includes high volumes of technical and mechanical training and a...

Coach, could you give us a list of five Do's and...
Sure! Do: 1. Help your child understand what is most important to learn and research 2. Be honest and up front in any discussions with coaches 3. Show support of your child’s decisions 4. Make sure your child understands the your $ expectations and responsibilities 5. Feel free to occasionally contact the coach with questions of your own. Don’t: 1. Do the recruiting for...

Letters of Recommendation?
A timely letter of recommendation from someone the coach knows could be a good idea.  However, lately there seems to be a trend of random letters coming in.  Often I get letters about someone that I’ve never heard from. If you are going to have someone call for you or send a letter for you make sure it is the icing on the cake and not the introduction.  Having an instructor or coach call...

What do you look for when you are watching a...
I’m looking at my iPhone for good restaurant options for when I’m done recruiting :). I’m looking for quality of golf skill, confidence level, demeanor, personality, etc. Every coach is looking for something different. When I’m actually watching the golf I really try to get a feel for the quality of their bad shots, their touch around the greens, and their ability score....

Hi coach: What should a parent look for in a golf...
What do you want for your child? There are certain parents that are attracted to the type of coach I am and others that are attracted to other things. Every coach is different in his areas of expertise, coaching style, leadership, communication style, values, goals, etc. So this is a question I think you just have to answer yourself. It is a vitally important one and will probably have more...

Hey Coach, what is you opinion on recruiting...
Not necessary if you are getting the looks already. Maybe not necessary even if you aren’t. Personal and specific communication from recruit to coach will always work out better than an impersonal recruiting service. If you do hire a recruiting service, make sure they really do specific and personal work as most emails from recruiting services are quickly deleted by...

I play golf for a Dlll team & had a great year....
This is a really tough call before one starts college. However, once you start I think it is good to finish what you start. Of course, sometimes one needs to transfer for various reasons, but I always discourage it. If you are playing well and comfortable I would always recommend staying loyal to your first school. If you do decide to transfer, make sure to communicate openly with your...
